Not as confusing as it looks...

Not as confusing as it looks ...

This is the first article in a new series we’re calling “seven-minute studies.” So what’s the big idea? Well, there are several scriptures that are often taken out of context and misunderstood, or are just a tad confusing. Many accuse the Bible of being full of contradictions. You may even think you’ve spotted one yourself! This series intends to apply the “line upon line, here a little, there a little” principle of Isaiah 28:13 in juicy, bite-sized portions you can sink your teeth into. Each is only a few paragraphs long, containing just a few scriptures to explain the subject under scrutiny. We’ll try to have one for you every week. You’ll be surprised what you can learn in seven minutes! Here’s the benefit to you:

  • Get to know your Bible
  • Understand “difficult” scriptures
  • Build good Bible study habits
  • Easy time commitment

Without further ado, let’s get into our first seven-minute study!

We Are What We Appear

August 19th, 2008

After camp, Miss Azariah and Miss Lamberth brought up this article as a possible post for the TE website. They said they were encouraged to change how they dressed and thought it would be a good encouragement for our teens. Enjoy! ~Adar Kielczewski

It’s always interesting to watch old footage of sports meetings—you know, the clips from the old black-and-white 16-millimeter newsreels. The pleasure comes not only from viewing sport generally played in a more gentlemanly and sportsmanlike manner, but also from noting the elegance of the dress of the spectators.

There was a time when the British peoples were admired and copied by other nations in their form of dress. It was, as Luigi Barzini commented, “a spontaneous homage, a flattering imitation” (The Europeans). Barzini observes that the typical English gentleman of the 19th century was “well-educated, well-behaved”—largely attributable to “good upbringing.” Aldous Huxley said that what made the typical English gents of the time so admired as models for the rest of the world was “their confidence, their ease … their prestige which the other people would like to deny but can’t” (Antic Hay).

It’s no coincidence that the time of the well-dressed, well-mannered, well-educated English gentleman coincided with the time of British greatness. We simply are what we appear. Just as “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34), so the image we project of ourselves and the social or national group to which we belong will be reflected in our outward appearance.

Keys to Becoming Responsible

August 15th, 2008

by Ryan Malone

What are some specific ways to make more responsible decisions?

Here are two: 1) being reliable; and 2) being able to prioritize properly.

1. Being responsible for something means you are reliable; other words for reliable are dependable, trustworthy. This means exactly what it sounds like. When people give you a responsibility, they can rely on you to treat the responsibility with care and timeliness. They can depend on your job. They can trust you. When you say you will do something, you don’t go back on your word.

We’ve talked about how the Bible can open your eyes to a whole new level of life. We know that God’s Word can totally change our relationships, our social lives, and everything else we do physically, mentally and, obviously, spiritually. We know that we need above all to have the right attitude in studying the Bible. We know that we need to repent, and believe what God says without reading our own meaning into it. We know that we should combine Bible study with prayer, meditation and fasting.

What else can help us really get to know our Bibles? Bible helps!

Softball, Chicago-style

August 11th, 2008

Last week, some of us graduates, members and students took some old PYC advice and tried a new sport! It’s called 16-inch softball; the way they play it in Chicago. The ball is a huge 16 inches in circumference, lead-offs are allowed, but gloves aren’t! It’ll make a man of you! Here are some pics; we really had a blast!
