Singing With the Children

I thought I knew just what to expect at the Feast this year since I was going to my home city, San Diego, California. As usual, there was enjoyable, moderate weather, brethren from around the world, and brethren I’d known for years. Inspiring sermons, rejoicing, and uplifting fellowship.

But this year was different than any other because I was assisting Miss Jennifer Ressler in the children’s choir. My main responsibilities were to help her keep the children in order and to encourage them to smile and sing out. It seemed simple enough, and I love working with children so I was more than happy to acquiesce.

At our first practice, we soon realized that the two-part harmony in the song was a lot for the children to follow with just one director. The decision was made for me to direct the younger children with the melody while Miss Ressler directed the older children with the harmony.

The day before we were scheduled to perform, I was getting nervous. I didn’t have any experience to draw on or a vast knowledge of music to reference. I knew if this was going to be successful it would take lots of practice, godly confidence and God’s help, so I spent most of my afternoon practicing and praying that I could lead the children effectively for the rehearsal the next day.

As the 9 a.m. rehearsal rolled around, I walked into the hall and onto the stage. I really hope I don’t mess this up, I thought. These kids are depending on me. And this is God’s Feast of Tabernacles!” I was feeling the pressure and getting nervous as the piano began playing. I’m pretty sure I forgot every word after the first line. I didn’t know what to do—the words were in my head, but I couldn’t recall them.

I kept smiling as I tried to think of the next line, hoping that the children couldn’t tell I was completely unqualified for this job. Then, I saw one of the girls from the headquarters congregation beaming with joy and singing the song with ease. Oh that’s the line! “If I call upon Him, He will hear me! I don’t have to fear for the Lord is near everywhere I GO!” Suddenly the words had taken on new life.

I confidently sang the remainder of the song. Practice ended very well and the special music service went even better. I can still hear all those little voices gleefully singing praise to God. I also learned how much we can learn from new experiences; our examples can uplift others, and when we put our faith in God, He will respond!

Thanks for sharing that with us Danielle! It sure can be a little bit nerve wracking sometimes when placed in a position of responsibility when others are counting on you, but that’s when we grow and learn so much :)
Way to step up and serve!

Wow Mrs. Lamberth. I didn’t know that you were nervous. You were smiling and happy; we couldn’t tell. I was placed smack dab in the middle (I’m on the top row, fifth from the left). I was nervous because I didn’t know my part. Thankfully, I was able to remember the words and keep up with the melody. You really helped Miss Ressler and thank you.
